Qualification

  • Bachelor's degree in any fields or higher. Two-year associate degree holders in any fields are NOT ELIGIBLE for E-2 visa even if you have a TESOL certificate. TESOL certificate itself without a formal bachelor's degree won't qualify you to become an ESL teacher in Korea now.


  • Citizen of English Speaking Countries (Canada, USA, AU, UK, NZ, SA only). The other countries such as Hong Kong, Singapore, the Philippines, and American Samoa are NOT considered English speaking countries by the Korean government even though English is an official and daily language in these countries.

Job Description

1. Class size : 10 ~ 15 for private academies and 25 to 30 students for public schools.
2. Materials : Provided. The methodology, however, is your sole responsibility.
3. Student Age : Some academies(type 1) - the age of 5 up to junior high school age, some academies(type 2) - from the     age of 8 up to business people, and some academies (type 3)- from the age of 20 up to business people. Public     schools are elementary (7 to 11), middle schools(12 tgo 14), and high schools(15 to18).
4. Teaching Hours : In general, type 1 academies:10am to 7pm, type 2 academies: 1pm to 9pm, and type 3     academies:(morning classes and evening classes). Public schools have 9am to 5pm.
5. Vacation : In general, type 1 & type 2 academies have one week paid vacation in summer, one week paid in winter.     type 3(Adults ESL schools) usually has one week paid vacation. Plus, Korean national holidays (approximately 14     days per year). Public schools have 3 weeks (urban settings) and 4 weeks vacation (rural settings).
6. Sick Leave : 2 ~ 3 paid days with a doctor's note for private academies and public schools have up to 15 days.
7. Emergency Leave : Approximately 5 paid days with an immediate family member emergency (cannot be abused!!!).
8. Transportation : One way ticket is provided before departure (private academies) or reimbursed(all public schools)     upon arrival, and the other return ticket will be provided upon successful completion of one work agreement.
9. Severance Pay : Many schools (not all) pay bonus upon completion of one year work agreement (one month salary).
10. Korean Income Tax : 3.3 ~ 5%.
11. Salary : Most of ESL private schools pay 2.1 up to 2.8 million won or more per month based on 30 teaching hours     (in-class time only)per week from Monday through Friday (Be aware of that some schools offer Saturday classes).
12. Accommodation : There are three different options; one of them is homestay with Korean family (which is very rare),     but you will have your own private space. Another option is a three or four bedroom apartment that will be shared with     other teachers. The last option is a private studio apartment. Public schools always provide with a private studio     apartment unless teachers bring their family members.
